Ben's White Whale is a Blue Fish

Turnaround/design drawings for the fish - which I spontaneously named 'Jonah'. A mix of prehistoric fish, large sharks and Piranha. Wee bit of angler fish too, I suppose. There's a silhouette of Ben for scale. Decided I needed the fish to be colours that help him blend in until he's right at the screen - but lamp-like, dead eyes, and teeth that are visible first.

Initial Concept Art

Some coloured versions of concept art from last semester.

'Ben' Coloured Turnarounds

Moving into this semester, I've started doing more pre-production work for The Fisherman, such as these colour tests (I also simplified Ben's design so as to make him easier to draw).

'Ben' Turnaround

The turnaround for the titular fisherman, Ben. This was done for the World Of the Story brief from last semester. While 'The Fisherman' unfortunately wasn't picked, there was some interest shown, and many friends and colleagues kept telling me to go back to it since seeing it as part of my folio submission in 1st year, something I was more than willing to do.

The Original Comic

The following's the original comic, written and lettered by Christian Bogetoft, pencilled and inked by me. This was done a few years ago during my Advanced Highers, and was part of my initial submission to DJCAD - so it's a nice way of things coming full circle to have it as part of my final year. Unfortunately, the last page never got lettered - though it is essentially just Ben saying how he hates fish at the end!

The Hook

Any good pitch needs a hook, and the lead in this had a big one. 'The Fisherman' is about a world in which both the water levels and the size of fish have risen. Ben, the titular fisherman, is tasked with providing for his small island community in the best way he knows how - old school bait and hook, new way of implementing it. This will be a production blog for the project, which will be pitched as a potential 4th Year film as part of the Animation course at DJCAD. The original concept was created by Christian Bogetoft for a 5-page comic we worked on (he wrote, I drew - it'll be put up here as some development work), the rights of which he's graciously passed on to me to continue with.
